Overview of the role and responsibilities
CARE USA is seeking an Executive Director of AI Transformation to lead the organization’s enterprise-wide artificial intelligence agenda. This role will position AI as a core strategic capability to accelerate impact, strengthen operational resilience, and enhance financial sustainability across CARE’s global portfolio.
As a senior enterprise leader, the Executive Director will define CARE’s AI vision and translate it into a scalable, value-driven portfolio of initiatives across country offices, programs, supply chain, finance, and shared services. The role bridges strategy and execution—ensuring AI is not treated as a standalone innovation stream, but embedded into how CARE delivers its mission.
This role will be instrumental in shaping CARE’s future operating model—leveraging AI to enable smarter decision-making, improve program effectiveness, optimize cost structures, and unlock new delivery and funding models.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Enterprise AI Strategy & Portfolio Leadership
- Define and own CARE’s AI strategy and multi-year roadmap, aligned with organizational priorities and Digital Transformation objectives
- Establish a prioritized, enterprise-wide AI portfolio focused on high-impact use cases (program delivery, supply chain, finance, risk, and operations)
- Create clear governance, investment, and prioritization frameworks to ensure disciplined execution and resource allocation
- Translate emerging AI capabilities into scalable, context-relevant solutions for diverse country office environments
Embedding AI into CARE’s Operating Model
- Drive integration of AI into core business processes, decision-making frameworks, and service delivery models
- Partner with Digital, IT, and functional leaders to operationalize AI solutions within existing systems (ERP, supply chain, program platforms)
- Enable “AI as a service” capability across CARE—ensuring reusable tools, platforms, and standards
- Support country offices in adopting AI solutions tailored to local contexts, constraints, and opportunities
Adoption, Change & Capability Development/Governance, Risk & Responsible AI
- Lead global AI adoption through structured change management, leadership engagement, and communication strategies
- Build organizational capability through training, learning pathways, and communities of practice
- Partner with People & Culture and Knowledge Management to embed AI literacy and data-driven decision-making across the workforce
- Establish and lead an AI Taskforce to coordinate adoption, share best practices, and scale successful pilots
- Establish and enforce enterprise AI governance aligned with CARE’s ethical principles, safeguarding standards, and environmental commitments
- Ensure responsible and inclusive AI deployment, particularly in vulnerable and low-resource settings
- Partner with Legal, Risk, and Information Security to manage regulatory, data privacy, and cybersecurity risks
- Maintain forward-looking awareness of global AI regulations and ensure organizational readiness
Value Realization & Performance Management/External Positioning & Strategic Partnerships
- Define and track enterprise AI value—efficiency gains, cost optimization, program outcomes, and risk reduction
- Build a transparent AI performance dashboard, covering pipeline, delivery status, and realized impact
- Ensure strong linkage between AI investments and financial sustainability objectives
- Provide regular reporting and strategic insights to Executive Leadership and Board Committees
- Position CARE as a leader in AI for humanitarian and development impact
- Engage donors, technology partners, and innovation platforms to mobilize funding and co-create solutions
- Lead CARE’s engagement with AI advisory groups and strategic partners (e.g., cloud, data, and AI providers
- Translate CARE’s AI work into compelling narratives that strengthen partnerships and unlock new funding streams
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Computer Science, Information Technology/Management, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Industrial Psychology or Human Resources
- Extensive leadership experience (10–15+ years) in change management, tech strategy, and data application
- Significant leadership experience in AI, digital transformation, enterprise technology, or innovation at scale
- Proven track record of delivering cross-functional transformation in complex, global organizations
- Strong understanding of AI technologies (e.g., GenAI, machine learning, data platforms) and their practical application in operational and program contexts
- Experience in international development, humanitarian, or mission-driven sectors strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into execution with measurable outcomes and value realization
- Strong financial and operational acumen, with the ability to link technology investments to impact and sustainability
- Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence at executive, board, and partner levels
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or MBA is strongly preferred
- Related industry certifications and credentials are also acceptable along with required number of years of experience (e.g. Leading Your Organization's AI and Digital Transformation, Microsoft Certified: AI Transformation Leader)
