Scope of Work  

Intake services interns will assist IRC’s intake team with daily activities that help to welcome and contribute to the self-sufficiency of refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants in the Baltimore metropolitan area. The intake team is the first point of contact for new “walk-in” asylees, parolees, secondary migrants and all other returning IRC clients. The team conducts eligibility assessments to determine client needs and refer to relevant IRC programs. Interns will meet directly with individual clients and families to support intake assessments.

Learning Objectives   

• Learn about the services that refugees, asylees and other humanitarian immigrants are eligible for upon arrival in the U.S., including public benefits in Maryland and local resources in the Baltimore metropolitan area.   

• Learn to conduct eligibility assessments for program services. 

• Learn to communicate effectively with a broad range of clients.   

Responsibilities  

• Under the direction of the intern’s supervisor, assist clients remotely or in-person with intake assessment appointments.  

• Assist with service documentation through case-notes and case file maintenance.   

• Support organization of weekly intake days at the office.  

• Other duties as assigned.   

Qualifications 

• Prior experience and interest working with refugees and immigrants preferred.  

• Prior experience and interest in case management or social work preferred.   

• Ability to work independently and as a team member in a fast-paced, global environment.  

• Flexible and reliable, with outstanding attention to detail.    

• Strong problem-solving skills.   

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.   

• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and web-based applications (databases, Box).   

• Fluency in English required. Bilingual ability in one of the predominant languages of the local client base is desired. 

Position Details  

• IN-PERSON: Fall 2026 internships will be hybrid. This includes a combination of standard office environment, remote work, and field time within the greater Baltimore area. Intern must be in person on Tuesday and Thursday (9 AM – 2 PM) and Friday (9 AM – 3 PM). 
• DATES: Internships start with a required orientation on Monday, September 14th (approx. 9:30 AM – 3 PM). Regular weekly hours start the week of September 14th, 2026, and will continue through December 18th, 2026 (14 total weeks). 
• HOURS: Internships require a minimum of 15 hours per week for 14 weeks. Interns should be able to come to the office at least 3 days per week. 
• LAPTOP: Interns will be issued an IRC laptop for the duration of the internship to perform both remote and in-office responsibilities.  
• REIMBURSEMENT: Internships with the IRC in Baltimore are unpaid. University credit may be arranged. Summer 2026 interns are eligible for per diem reimbursement at the rate of $15 per day (defined as 7.5 hours) to offset the costs of food and travel of the internship. Interns may also be reimbursed for mileage driven for any approved activities (based on round-trip mileage from the IRC office).

•INTERVIEWS: Applicants selected for interviews will be contacted to schedule interviews beginning August 1st 2026. Due to the volume of applications, only applicants who are selected for interviews will be contacted. Interviews will be conducted approximately August 1st through August 20th, 2026.  
•OFFERS: Applicants who have interviewed for positions can expect to receive a decision no later than August 25th, 2026. Confirmations will be due at the latest by August 27th, 2026.
