Duties and Responsibilities

The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean is one of the five regional Commissions of the United Nations. It was founded in 1948 with the purpose of contributing to the region's economic and social development. Its mission includes the design, monitoring and evaluation of public policies and the provision of advisory services, expertise, and training to Governments, as well as support for regional and international cooperation and coordination activities. The internship in CELADE-Population Division of ECLAC in Santiago (Chile) is for a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 months and designed to be full-time. The internship can be carried out in person at the ECLAC Headquarters in Santiago, as well as virtually or in a hybrid format. Within these limits, the duration and modality can be adjusted upon request of the successful candidate. Under the supervision or overall guidance of a Population Affairs Officer, the intern is expected to: a) To search, collect, and organize information and reference materials on population issues from various sources. b) To review and prepare detailed summaries of population and demographic studies. c) To generate and analyze demographic and population and development indicators. d) To process censuses and surveys microdata in order to generate sociodemographic indicators and generate preliminary analyses. Census microdata processing will be carried out using Redatam and R software (other software would be allowed in some cases). e) To support the organization and servicing of meetings, workshops and inter-governmental conferences related to the areas covered by the Division and its projects. f) To carry out other tasks as required by the Division.

Qualifications/special skills

The basic education required is HS Diploma. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). 1. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. 2. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master's or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor's, Master's or PH.D. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint. 4. Good knowledge of R and REDATAM is desirable. 5. English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish is required for the internship.
