Since 2017, IRC has supported Rohingya Refugees and Bangladeshi nationalities communities in Cox's Bazar, Khulna, Barisal, and Chittagong with integrated services. The organization also addresses climate change impacts by building resilience and promoting economic recovery, education, and protection.

 

Purpose of the Role

The MA is a member of the IRC health team and will be responsible for supporting the implementation of the IRC’s primary healthcare activities in the Rohingya Refugee Camp/host community. Medical Assistant will ensure the delivery of high-quality emergency and primary healthcare activities to the local catchment population including child health and sexual and reproductive healthcare services.

 

Under the supervision of the Medical Doctor and in conjunction with other healthcare staff, the MA will be responsible for the delivery of basic medical care, and in particular:

  • Apply knowledge and skills to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of emergency and primary healthcare problems, ensuring appropriate patient triage and referral as needed,
  • Provide health promotion and counseling to patients and caregivers,
  • Ensure emergency and primary healthcare services are implemented in conformity with relevant Ministry of health or international guidelines,
  • Ensure timely and accurate recording of patient information and consultations in relevant patients registers and facilitate the timely submission of required health reports.

Highlights of Key Responsibilities

 

Clinical Care:

  • Under the supervision of medical doctors, the medical assistant will provide direct clinical care, working closely with the other clinical staff to ensure the delivery of high-quality emergency and primary healthcare services.
  • Perform triage, screening, and assessment of patients.
  • Provision of inpatient and outpatient treatment (where possible), ensuring medications are given to patients as prescribed by the Medical Doctor.
  • Delivery of hygiene promotion, health education, and patient/caregiver counseling.
  • Ensure adherence to infection prevention and control measures.
  • Ensure accurate recording of information in the clinic registers, and timely completion of summary reports.
  • Ensure clinical areas are appropriately stocked with essential equipment and supplies. Ensure patient confidentiality is respected, and that all consultations are conducted in a dignified and respectful manner.

 

Staff Supervision & Development:

  • Maintain open and professional relations with team members, promoting a strong team spirit and providing guidance to enable staff to successfully perform in their positions.
  • Provide nursing/medical support and mentorship to other staff, providing on-the-job training for volunteers, health educators & others needed.

 

Project Management:

  • Implement outreach activities with the rest of the team to access “hard to reach‟ and vulnerable beneficiaries to increase service utilization.
  • Work with and support community volunteers to provide health promotion, community mobilization, and awareness raising.
  • Take participation in engagement awareness sessions with community leaders to increase acceptance in the community.
  • Ensure regular inventory and consumption tracking of medical drugs and supplies.
  • Work with relevant staff to ensure prompt requesting of medical drugs and supplies.

 

Coordination & Representation:

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with local communities, camp focal, camp in charge, local government agencies and other implementing partners
  • Attend and conduct meetings with local government agencies, site management, sector focal, and implementing partners.

 

Monitoring & Reporting:

  • Ensure all patient consultations are documented and patient records completed.
  • Submit daily reports in a timely manner.
  • Work & support with MEAL team for data reporting & documentation.

 

Other Duties:

  • Consistently and proactively monitor/assess the safety and security of the team; promptly reporting concerns or incidents to IRC management and liaising with community leaders and other external parties as required to maintain/improve the security environment for IRC programs.
  • Promote and actively participate in initiatives and efforts to build team engagement, inclusion and cohesion in IRC [team/office]
  • Foster ongoing learning, honest dialogue and reflection to strengthen safeguarding and to promote IRC values and adherence to IRC policies.

 

Experience

  • At least 2 years of clinical experience in emergency and primary healthcare
  • Previous experience and training in sexual gender-based violence and clinical care for sexual assault survivors (desirable)

 

Competencies: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Registered with local Nursing/Paramedic Council
  • Ability to lead, train, supervise and facilitate other medical staff and community health workers in their respective tasks
  • Ability and flexibility to understand the cultural and political environment
  • Skills to provide sensitive and appropriate medical counseling
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Must be a great teammate with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work under pressure in a stressful environment, displaying patience, compassion and diplomacy
  • Ability to be innovative, flexible, adaptive, and willing to work in challenging situations
  • Ability to live in challenging conditions and ability to work under difficult and high-pressure situations

 

Specific Educational Qualification

  • Medical Assistant degree from a reputed institution
