The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience.
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organisations and/or for whom an internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
Background Information
This opportunity is open exclusively to internationals, and the Intern position will be performed remotely.
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) implements protection programming across camps, informal settlements, and areas of return and reintegration. Protection interventions aim to prevent, mitigate, and respond to risks of human rights violations, including gender-based violence (GBV), exploitation, abuse, and other protection concerns affecting migrants and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
IOM adopts a people-centred approach to ensure that the rights, dignity, and well-being of affected populations, particularly individuals in need of assistance, are at the core of all interventions.
Responsibilities
Supervision
Under the general guidance of the Deputy Chief of Mission, the overall supervision of the Head, Mobility Pathways and Inclusion Division, and the direct supervision of the Protection Coordinator, the intern will support the GBV team in strengthening the implementation and quality of GBV programming. This includes contributing to activities related to GBV prevention and response, capacity building of staff and partners, and integration of GBV risk mitigation across sectors. The intern will also support coordination efforts, development of tools and guidance, and documentation of programme activities to ensure alignment with inter-agency GBV standards and a survivor-centred approach.

Develop a practical understanding of GBV programming in humanitarian settings, including prevention, response, and risk mitigation.

Strengthen knowledge of GBV guiding principles and the survivor-centred approach, and how these are applied in practice.

Build skills in drafting and adapting GBV materials, including training content, awareness materials, and programme documents.

Gain familiarity with GBV coordination processes, service mapping, and referral pathways.

Develop the ability to support the integration of GBV risk mitigation across sectors.
Training Components and Learning Elements

On-the-job mentoring and supervision: Regular guidance from the Protection Coordinator and GBV Officer, including feedback on tasks and written outputs.

Exposure to GBV programming: Participation in prevention and response activities, including awareness raising, capacity building, and support to programme implementation.

Thematic learning: Engagement with key GBV topics such as survivor-centred approaches, safe disclosures, and inclusion through applied tasks and readings.

Practical training: Hands-on support in developing and adapting GBV tools, SOPs, and IEC materials.

Participation in coordination processes: Involvement in internal discussions and, where relevant, external meetings to understand stakeholder engagement.

Exposure to reporting and documentation: Contribution to drafting programme updates and other documents.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education

Be enrolled in a Master’s Degree Programme in Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Social Work, Psychology, International Development, Law, or related field, or have graduated with a Master’s Degree, and if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
Experience
- Demonstrated interest or experience in GBV, protection, or humanitarian programming

Understanding of GBV guiding principles and survivor-centered approaches

Experience supporting trainings, community activities, or programme implementation is an asset

Experience in drafting documents or reports is an advantage
Skills

Strong understanding of women’s protection, GBV, migration, international law, and human rights framework

Good communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to work effectively, harmoniously, and independently in a remote working setting

Languages
For this internship, fluency in English is required (oral and written).
Fluency in Arabic language is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes
Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
